The Law Offices of Alan Ellis is a full-service sentencing and post-conviction law firm representing exclusively white collar and other federal criminal defendants and inmates throughout the United States and abroad.
For over 40 years, the firm has worked with defendants and inmates and consulted with many of the world’s leading criminal defense attorneys to develop strategies that obtain the lowest possible sentence for clients, to be served at the best facility possible, with the greatest opportunity for early release.
According to Federal Lawyer magazine, the firm’s founder, “Alan Ellis is one of this country’s pre-eminent criminal defense lawyers.” The San Francisco affiliate of ABC-TV has described Mr. Ellis as “the best in the business.” Verdict magazine quotes other legal commentators as saying that he is “the go-to guy in America if you you’re in deep trouble with the Feds.” The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has described him as a “nationally-recognized expert in federal criminal sentencing.”
Areas of concentration include:
- Plea negotiations
- Sentencing representation and consultation
- Prison designation, transfers, disciplinary matters, and other problems
- Direct appeals in all circuits from conviction and sentence
- Rule 35 motions
- 2255 Habeas corpus motions and 2241 Petitions
- International prisoner transfer treaty work for foreign inmates and Americans arrested abroad
- International Criminal Law
The firm has an international practice with regional offices in the San Francisco Bay Area, New York City, and Shanghai, China. Affiliated with the firm are three mitigation specialists, two of whom are former United States Probation Officers, the other is a forensic licensed clinical social worker, and two federal prison consultants formerly employed at a high level by the Bureau of Prisons.
Approximately one-third of the firm’s work comes to us from defense attorneys requesting our assistance on cases. Another one-third comes to us from clients, their family or friends who are currently represented by counsel. Many of these individuals are pleased with their attorneys and simply want us to consult with them to ensure a better result. Some, however, are concerned with the performance, ability or skills of their current attorney and want Mr. Ellis either to consult with them or to actually take over their representation. The final third of our clientele comes to me directly.
With increasing frequency, I am being called upon to consult and assist earlier in the criminal defense process. This is due in no small part to the importance of plea bargaining and the significant recognition that planning and preparation for sentencing, prison placement, and post-conviction remedies must not be relegated to the post-verdict or part-plea stage of the proceedings.
While I cannot guarantee or predict a favorable outcome in any particular case, I will not take a case which I believe has no merit. I will only handle a case if I think the client has a reasonable chance of success. Accordingly, when an individual or his family or friends call us, I require a thorough review of the record before I will agree to represent the person.
