Jay Hurst, Of Counsel to the firm, practices nationally, advising defense attorneys and individual defendants about all phases of federal prosecution, from pre-trial detention to plea negotiations, sentencing, appeals, and collateral challenges (habeas corpus law). He has appeared in federal courts around the country in cases ranging from drug trafficking to environmental violations to police misconduct and public corruption. Jay also helps inmates and their families with Federal Bureau of Prisons problems. Besides his criminal law practice, Jay regularly seeks U.S. Government records under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Privacy Act, and handles cases involving civil rights violations.
Jay has presented Continuing Legal Education programs on federal sentencing and Bureau of Prisons issues, and is an active member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) and NACDL’s Corrections Committee. Jay is the co-author with Alan Ellis of “Federal BOP Puts a Little Compassion in Its Newest Release Program” in the American Bar Association’s Criminal Justice Magazine.
